Russia Bolsters Solidarity Efforts in Support of the Cuban Five

Havana, Dec 28 (ACN) The Russia-Cuba Friendship Association is stepping
up actions calling for the release of the five Cuban men unjustly
imprisoned in the US.

In a meeting of the friendship committee's leadership, its president,
Vadim Sayuchev, said activities in favor of the Cuban Five's cause have
been intensified during the ongoing world campaign of solidarity with
Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino and
Antonio Guerrero.

Sayuchev expressed the organization's goal to spread awareness about
the case and fight for their released, reported Prensa Latina.

The Cuban Five were arrested in Miami in 1998 after uncovering
terrorist actions being planned by anti-Cuba organizations based in
Miami.

The five men were sentenced on charges of espionage in a
politically-biased trial held in a Miami court.

Referring to the projects for the upcoming year, Sayuchev spoke about a
ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death in combat of
Che Guevara, who co-founded the Cuba-Russia association along with
Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin.

Cuba's ambassador to Russia, Jorge Marti, thanked the members of the
organization for their continuous support during 2006.
