Abstinence-only Advocate Sarah Palin Says Her 17-year-old Daughter Is Pregnant

[Ed. note: So much for the effectiveness of that "abstinence-only" sex-ed approach. I guess those previous rumors were not worthless after all since it forced Palin to expose her hypocrisy. Did McCain know about this when he chose her for VP?]

Palin's teenage daughter pregnant

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, newly picked as Republican John McCain's running mate, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

Mrs Palin, a social conservative who is opposed to abortion, said in a statement her daughter Bristol would keep the child and marry its father.

The Alaska governor, a mother-of-five, was presented three days ago as her party's vice-presidential candidate.

The news comes as the Republicans' national convention is about to begin.

The McCain campaign and Palins asked for respect for the couple's privacy.

Mrs Palin and her husband Todd said in a statement: "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realise very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family."

Bristol is reportedly five months pregnant and is due to give birth in late December.

Advisers to the McCain campaign said they had known about the pregnancy before offering Mrs Palin the vice-presidential nomination.

"Senator McCain's view is this is a private family matter," said McCain spokesman Steve Schmidt.

As parents, [the Palins] love their daughter unconditionally and are going to support their daughter. Life happens."

Talking point

The BBC's Justin Webb in St Paul, Minnesota, where the Republicans' national convention is taking place this week, says the news will certainly be a talking point but may not damage Mrs Palin's standing.

She was brought on board to appeal to social conservatives, our correspondent says, and they may respect the decision by her daughter to keep the baby and to marry the father.

However, some people in the party who already had concerns about the lack of knowledge about Mrs Palin's record may fear what other revelations lie in wait, our correspondent adds.

The party's four-day convention opens on Monday but its schedule has been curtailed because of the threat of Hurricane Gustav to states on the southern US coast.

Mrs Palin is due to be formally nominated by delegates as the party's vice-presidential choice later this week.

She was elected governor of Alaska in 2006 and before that was mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Alaska.

Bristol Palin already married?

One rumor going around the Internet is that Bristol Palin was already married in a typical shotgun-style wedding. That rumor could be completely false. On the other hand, there is a picture of the Palin family at an event in which Bristol clearly is sporting what appears to be a wedding and/or engagement ring on the appropriate ring finger.

If that rumor pans out -- a big "if" -- could another embarrassing announcement be forthcoming?

Bristol already married!

I really doubt it. I have found that those who are the strongest advocates of "family values" are the least likely to demonstrate them. Now the Republicans say that it's no one's business, and that the family is off limits. Of course they didn't believe that about Bill Clinton's family. It's only when it applies to them. All of a sudden, even the Evangelical ministers have found "compassion" that they were not ready to extend to the Clintons. Do you think for one minute the Republicans would not have rejoiced to report any indescretion on the part of Bill Clinton's daughter? And they would have justified doing so by blaming Bill and Hillary Clinton for putting themselves in the public eye. Personally, I am tired of the Republican hypocrisy!

Palin's daughter is having an illigitimate child and her husband was arrested for drunk driving. I don't think she is the one to tell the rest of us about family values. She, herself, is charged with abuse of power in her office as Governor of Alaska. She should fit in well with the Republicans already in Washington! Surely people are smart enough not to elect her.

What if the situation were flipped?

Do you think for one minute the Republicans would not have rejoiced to report any indescretion on the part of Bill Clinton's daughter?

Well, considering the Chelsea Clinton joke John McCain used to frequently tell (circa 1998), I think that answer would be definitely no.

The joke?

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?"

"Because Janet Reno is her father!"

Jamie Lynn Spears on the national political stage?

I can't help but to think of this sorry affair in a macro viewpoint.

First, McCain clearly did not vet Palin. No one picks an inexperienced VP holding abstinence-only views who has a pregnant 17 year old. McCain chose Palin only to placate the religious right and to attract disaffected Hillary supporters. But McCain blew his choice big time -- pure and simple. That doesn't speak well of McCain's judgment.

Even more appalling is Palin herself. As I said in a previous post about Sarah Palin's own pregnancy:

No matter what the real story is, her decision to fly from Texas to Alaska after waking up at 4am leaking amniotic fluid, in labor with a premature, Down Syndrome baby, without even warning the airline about the situation -- and that is all from newspaper reports -- that is the height of stupidity and irresponsibility. If she's that irresponsible with her own baby, do you want her in a position of power?

Palin's husband worked a week-plus on/off job in the oilfields on the North Slope of Alaska. Who knows who was staying with Palin's Down Syndrome baby and her pregnant teenage daughter while she was working and commuting between Juneau and Wasilla. I have nothing against women who work outside of the home, but as a parent, we all know you cannot do it all. Tough choices have to be made.

In the case of Sarah Palin, what I see is a Down Syndrome baby who is likely getting precious little parent-time, and a teenager who obviously is not living by her mother's fundamentalist values. Those kids need their parents to be parents and not politicians.

Why would Palin take the VP offer from McCain and expose her daughter to this level of scrutiny? Sarah Palin clearly deserves her old high school basketball nickname: the Barracuda. This is at best another example of extremely poor judgment by Sarah Palin.

I honestly don't see how the Republicans can sell her as the "perfect mother" -- which they are clearly trying to do -- to the religious right. The religious right may have empathy and might even like her, but do they really buy into that load of PR hooey?

Given Palin's widely discussed shortcomings in experience, and her disastrous personal life choices, Sarah Palin is simply not ready for the national political stage.

McCain botched his VP choice -- badly. If McCain were smart, he would have Palin resign "for personal and family reasons" and pick Lieberman or Romney or anyone else.

Let me get this straight

She wants to shove her failed abstinance only sex ed policies down my family's throats? But Obama thinks that issue is off limits?

She also wants Alaska to secede from the US?

They can secede only if they take her with them.

Re: Let me get this straight

Obama is just playing it low key and is trying to take the high road -- because he knows that McCain simply must dump this whack job. The only question is whether McCain will dump Palin immediately or after waiting a couple/few weeks. I'm guessing the more immediate dumping.

Constitutionally, according to the 10th Amendment Alaska does have the right to secede from the US. New York, Virginia, and Rhode Island only approved the US Constitution if the states themselves retained the right to leave the union. Despite what Lincoln did in the Civil War, states do have this right.

There are many states with secession movements, with Hawaii and Vermont's being probably the most politically active. Legal arguments aside, this won't play well nationally since "secession" is propagandized into a four-letter word.

But think of what this means about Palin. How can she support secession for Alaska and yet still run for a US-wide public office? How can she support secession and yet be "happy" (her quote) that her son is fighting to occupy Iraq? And if she changed her position, what is her reasoning and logic that caused her change? These are legitimate questions.

And think of what McCain's views on this would be.

McCain is a product of the US empire. His Navy Admiral grandfather fought to acquire the Philippines as a US colony. McCain was born in a US colony, the Panama Canal Zone. McCain's Navy Admiral father, along McCain's own military and Vietnam war experience probably has deep meaning to him.

How does McCain feel about Palin being a supporter of Alaskan secession?

There's no doubt about it. McCain will dump Palin. It will be a very interesting election if he doesn't. (LOL)
